For a show that loves to point back to its legacy for creating viral, jaw dropping moments, it was pretty lacklustre this year.
Don't get me wrong, the performances by Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan were everything.
Also shoutout to the backflip KING Benson Boone.
But it just felt like something was missing.
Perhaps it was because so many awards were announced off camera meaning there was less room for interesting speeches or reactions from winners.
I just expected more from the 40th anniversary.
But there's always next year!
I'm loving the replays of our favourite artists watching their favourite artists!
A lot of people have a lot of thoughts about Fortnight taking out Song of the Summer...
Look, I know the VMAs have always pushed their performances more than the actual awards but it felt like we only saw maybe three artists make speeches tonight.
For an awards ceremony that prides itself on 'shocking moments' there was almost no space for anything off the cuff.
And if there were going to go so hard on the performances maybe they could have upped the ante a little? Did we really need a three song medley from Lenny Kravitz? Did we need to cut back to Teddy Swims's basic set up so many times?
Between Eminem's Slim Shady re-do and the constant cuts to big moments of yore, it felt a little bit like they were trying to recreate the highs of past VMAs than creating news ones.
But they did give us this picture and for that I am grateful.
Back to our K-Pop video winner LISA for a second.
She also made history tonight, becoming the second K-Pop artist to win twice in her category.
She made history in 2022 when she became the first female and first solo artist to do so.
Missed out on the fashion at the start of the evening?
Don't worry, we've got you covered.
Just as quick as it started, the 2024 VMAs are over!
What was your favourite part? Benson Boone's double backflip? Megan Thee Stallion as host? Sabrina Carpenter making out with an alien?
