How did the suspect know Donald Trump was going to be at the golf course?

The Secret Service was tight-lipped when asked if there was any evidence suggesting the suspect knew Trump would be playing at the golf course on Sunday afternoon, local time.

They said the investigation was still in its early stages.

Suspect did not fire a shot

Ryan Wesley Routh did not fire a shot before fleeing the golf course, the Secret Service's acting director Ron Rowe said.

Mr Rowe also defended the Secret Service's protections and said the alleged shooter was never in the line of sight of Trump.

He praised authorities for their response to what had been an "unprecedented and hyper dynamic threat environment" facing the US since July 13.

White House called for increased security for Trump after first assassination attempt in July

Acting director of the US Secret Service Ron Rowe:

"President Biden made it clear that he wanted the highest levels of protection for former president Trump, and for Vice-President (Kamala) Harris."

This was in the days following the attempt on Trump's life at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

'Numerous felony charges' from 1997-2010

Ryan Routh was repeatedly charged with possession of stolen goods between 1997 and 2010, Mr Veltri said.

This is in addition to his gun possession charges in 2002 and 2010.

Suspect's apparent intention to recruit soldiers for Afghanistan and Ukraine being probed

Multiple evidentiary items are being processed by the  FBI's evidence response team, Mr Veltri said.

These include the rifle recovered at the scene, the suspect's backpacks, and ceramic tiles. DNA was also collected from the items.

Ryan Routh's online searches to determine the "full totality of the subject's social media presence".

"In addition, we're going through media reports and public statements he made that he wanted to recruit Afghanistan soldiers and others to fight for Ukraine."

FBI has more than four search warrants so far

The FBI's special agent in charge of the Miami Field Office, Jeffrey Veltri, says the agency views the investigation as "extremely serious and are determined to provide answers".

He said the agency was working to pursue and execute a number of search warrants

So far these warrants include a video recording device, the subject's cellular device, a vehicle, and other electronic devices located at previous known addresses.

Mr Veltri said the FBI was working with the Secret Service to complete "numerous interviews" of agents on scene.

Seven civilian interviews have already been conducted. Ryan Wesley Routh's friends, family members, and colleagues will also be questioned.

Assassination charges not yet ruled out

Attorney Markenzy Lapointe says the FBI is leading the investigation into the incident at Trump's golf club as an assassination attempt.

This means more federal charges can follow the earlier charges against Ryan Wesley Routh for gun possession.

"The investigation remains at its early stages," Mr Lapointe said.

"The entire Justice Department, including the FBI to the United States Attorney's office for the southern district of Florida, and the National Security division, are coordinating closely with our law enforcement partners to full investigate and prosecute this matter."

Suspect had two prior criminal convictions

Mr Routh was convicted of felonies in North Carolina in December 2002 and March 2010, and therefore was prohibited from possessing a firearm, the prosecution says.

Rifle found on scene had serial number wiped out

Attorney Markenzy Lapointe explained the circumstances around the suspect's arrest:

"According to the allegations in the complaint, a US Secret Service agent walking the golf course perimeter saw what appeared to be a rifle poking out of the tree line.

"After the agent fired a service weapon in the direction of the rifle, a witness saw a man, later identified as Routh, fleeing the area in the tree line.

"The complaint alleges that the area in the tree line from which Routh fled, agents found a digital camera, a backpack, a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope, and a black plastic bag containing food.

"The serial number on the rifle was obliterated."
