IDF currently attacking Bekaa region

In the last few minutes, the IDF has confirmed it is continuing to strike Hezbollah targets in the Bekaa region of Lebanon.

It said on social media platform X: "The IDF is now attacking Hezbollah terrorist targets in the Bekaa region of Lebanon."

One rocket launch into Israel 'fell in open area'

Earlier we reported that the Israeli military had intercepted some rockets launched into northern Israel.

The IDF detected around 10 launches from Lebanon into the Upper Galilee area.

It has now confirmed that one of those rockets made its way into the Samaria area and fell in an open area.

"Following the alerts that were activated a short time ago in the Samaria region, one launch was detected that crossed the territory of Lebanon and fell in an open area," a post on X said.

Hospitals evacuated in Beirut's southern suburbs

Lebanon's health ministry said on Saturday that hospitals in Beirut's southern suburbs would be evacuated after heavy Israeli strikes in the area, urging hospitals in unaffected areas to stop admitting non-urgent cases.

A ministry statement called on hospitals unaffected by Israeli strikes to "stop receiving non-emergency cases until the end of next week in order to make space to receive patients from hospitals in Beirut's southern suburbs which will be evacuated due to the developments in the aggression".

The health ministry has yet to provide an updated death toll for strikes.

The latest images from Lebanon have started to drop on the news wires.

Video shows IDF strikes

The IDF has shared video footage of strikes it carried out in Lebanon overnight.

It attacked "buildings where weapons were stored, launchers aimed at the rear of the State of Israel and military buildings where terrorists from the terrorist organization Hezbollah were operating".

IDF intercept 'some launches' into northern Israel

A short time ago, alerts were activated in the Upper Galilee area of northern Israel after rocket launches were detected.

The IDF said about 10 launches crossed the territory of Lebanon and some of them were intercepted.

In a statement on X, it said: "Following the alerts that were activated a short time ago in the Upper Galilee area, about ten launches were detected that crossed the territory of Lebanon, some of them were intercepted.

"The IDF continues to attack, damage and degrade Hezbollah's military capabilities and infrastructure in Lebanon."

Wave after wave of Israeli air strikes in Lebanon overnight

For those just tuning in, the Israeli military has conducted a series of strikes in locations across Lebanon's south and east over the past 10 hours, aimed at what it says are "strategic terrorist targets".

The IDF has continually posted to its X account alerting to its operations in different areas but the precise locations of the strikes are a bit muddled.

These are the ones we know of so far:

The first major strike took place in Dahiyeh, a densely populated part of southern Beirut, about 6:30pm, local time, Friday. The IDF claimed this targeted Hezbollah headquarters.

An unprecedented five hours of continuous strikes early on Saturday followed Friday's attack, by far the most powerful by Israel on Beirut during nearly a year of war with Hezbollah. About 1am, local time, buildings in Bourj el-Barajneh, the Hadath area, and Laylaki neighbourhoods were struck.

Then, the Bekaa Valley, another Hezbollah stronghold 30km east of Beirut, was attacked somewhere around 4am local time. The IDF said it struck terrorist targets "deep" in the valley.

We'll bring you more as we have it.

IDF confirm attack 'deep in Lebanon'

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed a further attack "deep in Lebanon".

In a statement on X, it said: "The IDF recently attacked additional terrorist targets of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in the Bekaa, deep in Lebanon."

Why hasn't Hezbollah hit back harder at its regional enemies?

Hezbollah has more than 150,000 rockets in its possession, according to Israeli estimates, but its missile launchers are often overpowered by the IDF's capabilities.

Hilal Khashan, a political analyst from the American University of Beirut, says Hezbollah's deployment ability is much lesser than what its stockpiles suggest.

"Before the war started, estimates suggested that Hezbollah will be able to fire 3,000 missiles at Israel every day. Hezbollah has been firing less than 10 per cent of that figure," he told ABC Weekend Breakfast.

"It seems to me that Hezbollah is unable to do more."

Hezbollah's Al-Manar television reported Israeli strikes in at least five areas of Beirut's southern suburbs.

While AFP images showed fires raging after the strikes and smoke rising in several areas south of Lebanon's capital.
