And so ends another entertaining Test series

And that is that for another phenomenally entertaining Test series.

Australia rebounds from a calamitous start in Perth and ensures reports of the team's death turn out to be greatly exaggerated, with three enthralling victories in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

Some truly excellent cricket was played by both teams.

Jasprit Bumrah was elite throughout and made a claim for the best series by a touring bowler in Australia. How different this match might have been had he played today. Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his emergence with a century and two 50s on his first tour of Australia.

But on the other side, it was more of a team effort. Travis Head led the batting with 392 runs in his first four innings, but when he dropped off, others picked up the slack. Steve Smith rediscovered some former, Marnus Labuschagne made valuable contributions in Melbourne, Sam Konstas captured the world's attention in a wild half-hour on Boxing Day, and then Beau Webster stood suitably tall on debut in Sydney.

On the bowling front, Pat Cummins was a leader throughout with 25 wickets at 21.36 in the series, while Mitchell Starc had some superb outings early in the series before Scott Boland returned to the line-up to finish things off.

Thank you for joining us throughout this series, but make sure you don't go too far.

ABC Sport will have live coverage of all seven Women's Ashes matches from January 12, as well as the men's tour of Sri Lanka and, for the non-cricket tragics among you, we'll be live blogging every day of the Australian Open tennis from Jan 12-28.

We'll see you there!

Mitchell Starc to take a week off bowling after tough series

Mitchell Starc tells ABC Sport he's pretty sore but not exactly broken down, despite struggling with a back injury.

"It's taken a little bit of a toll. It's why we play Test cricket, push the needle as far as it'll go. I tried to take the handbrake off the other day and might have pushed it a little too far."

Starc says he's taking six days off bowling before resuming training for Sri Lanka.

He is going to have a chance to commentate some of wife Alyssa Healy's games during the Women's Ashes, starting on January 12, after she had plenty of shots at him in comms for this series.

Pat Cummins 'probably not' going to Sri Lanka

Australia's captain tells ABC Sport "at this stage [he's] probably not" going to Sri Lanka for the two-Test series starting at the end of the month.

His wife, Becky, is 37 weeks pregnant with their second child, so he's staying home in "a bit of a waiting game".

But before that, he's got some celebrations to get through.

He says the bowlers are pretty knackered, so might have a low-key one.

As far as the relationship goes with the Indian team after a hard-fought series, he says it's pretty good, thanks in no small part to the relationships formed in T20 franchises around the world.

"It gets spicy at times but mostly leave it out there."

Pat Cummins having the time of his life leading a special group

Australia captain Pat Cummins has never won a Border-Gavaskar series and says he's overjoyed to tick this one off the list.

"We've managed to have a lot of fun along the way. Love playing alongside these guys.

"It's such a special group. Really proud with what we've been able to achieve and hopefully having the best time of our lives as we're doing it all together."

Cummins says the well-attended series — 837,879 a record for a series between Australia and India — proves Test cricket is still king.

"It'll go down as one of my favourite series. The fans have made this series. It shows why Test cricket's the best format."

Jasprit Bumrah is player of the series

Jasprit Bumrah is disappointed and frustrated but said he could only listen to his body when it told him it was no good.

"Probably missed out on the spiciest wicket of the series."

He is disappointed but says it's far from a disaster for India.

"Lots of ifs and buts because the whole series was well fought. It's not like it was totally one sided. Whichever team holds their nerve and sticks together will win."

What lessons can they take from the series?

"Being in the game for longer, creating pressure, absorbing pressure and playing to the situation. In Test cricket you have to adapt and these learnings will help us in the future."

He says young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy will take lessons from this series as they carry Indian cricket going forward.

Scott Boland is player of the match

A 10-wicket haul took him to 21 wickets at an average of 13.19 in just three matches.

He's behind only Jasprit Bumrah (32) and Pat Cummins (25) in terms of wickets for the series.

"I probably didn't expect to play too much of a part in the series but I prepared as if I was going to. Just got my body right. Long hours in the gym. Just happy to be here now.

"I'm happy playing a part wherever I can."

Usman Khawaja on getting "Bumrah'd" in this series

India's star bowler and twice-captain in this series, Jasprit Bumrah, carried such a heavy load in this series.

He took 32 wickets (India's next best was Mohammed Siraj with 20) and did it at an average of 13.06 and a strike rate of a wicket every 28.37 balls.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja says he's the best bowler he's faced.

"I was just getting Bumrah'd," he tells ABC Sport.

"It's a shame he was [injured] but thank god for us. Today would've been an absolute nightmare facing him on that wicket. As soon as we didn't see him out there we thought 'alright, we've got a chance here'.

"He's the toughest bowler I've ever faced."

And a final word on Aussie newcomer Sam Konstas …

"I've never met anyone so arrogant but so endearing at the same time. He's a very lovable character. He's got this sense of being arrogant but saying it with a smile on his face."

Australia has the trophy for the first time in a decade

Since Australia beat India 2-0 in the 2014/15 series, Australia lost in India in 2017 and 2023, and at home in 2018/19 and 2020/21.

This was a phenomenal series, with only the rain-soaked Gabba Test ending in a draw. Otherwise all the other Tests were enthralling contests.

  • 1st Test: India won by 295 runs in Perth
  • 2nd Test: Australia won by 10 wickets in Adelaide
  • 3rd Test: Match drawn in Brisbane
  • 4th Test: Australia won by 184 runs
  • 5th Test: Australia won by six wickets

Australia was in tatters after getting rolled in Perth, bounced back with a dominant win in the day-nighter in Adelaide, before the Gabba Test gave everyone some time to breathe.

Australia's 184-run win in the last hour of day five in Melbourne was a classic, and this game came right down to squeaky-bum time.

It ended in just a bit over two-and-a-half days and a six-wicket victory may sound big, but on this deck you felt they were never truly home until Beau Webster clattered those winning runs.

AUSTRALIA WINS BY SIX WICKETS TO RECLAIM THE BORDER-GAVASKAR TROPHY

Another famous victory for Australia to beat India in a Test series for the first time since 2014 and they've done it with a dramatic win here at the SCG.

Debutant Beau Webster hits the winning runs with an authoritative slap down the ground for a boundary and, as Sam Konstas did in his first game, claims a stump for a match he'll never forget.

He scored 57 and 39 not out, took his first Test wicket and nabbed two sharp catches in the first innings. Not bad for the 31-year-old.

27th over - Washington Sundar gets his first over of the match with Australia 11 runs from victory

Brutal from Virat Kohli. Here, go get tonked for the winning runs.

And they've got a long-off in place! So Head just bunts a single down the ground.

There's a long-on too. So Webster takes one to him.

Short, wide and cracked by Head to deep cover for one more.

FOUR! Beau Webster times a square drive beautifully through point and Australia is four runs away.

Will he go for the victory in one shot?

HE'S DONE IT!!! Four runs from Beau Webster to win the series!
