Victim to have life-long impacts

Detective Tilley says the victim is in contact with police but is providing limited cooperation.

He says the impacts of the shooting on the victim will be life-long.

"He's a tradesman but unfortunately he isn't able to return to work," he says.

"He has a significant injury to his left ankle area, he's had reconstructive surgery, ongoing weekly rehabilitation.

"The surgeon has indicated that he won't return to full use of his left leg."

Gunman appears to have acted alone

Based on the CCTV footage the gunman enters the drivers seat of the car which suggests to police he acted alone.

But detective Tilley says the windows were tinted so he unsure if there was anyone else in the car at the time.

Police say shooter could have killed victim

Detective Tilley says he believes the offender was trying to send a message to the victim.

"The angle of the firearm is pointed down at the time of the shooting so I don't believe that the intention was to kill," he says.

"He certainly got up close enough if he wanted to do that I believe he could have."

Victim was known to gangland figure gunned down earlier this year

The victim was known to gangland figure Sam Abdulrahim who was fatally shot at an apartment complex car park in Preston in January this year.

"We've explored all options in relation to that," detective Tilley says.

"I can say they were known to each other but ... we have no intelligence to suggest that because of his association with Sam that this matter is linked."

Motive unknown at this stage

Police say the victim was lured to the address after being called out to attend a trades job.

The victim owns a business and had received a message through that business to attend a property and provide a quote.

Detective Tilley says the victim does not know why he was shot.

He is known to police and officer's have explored a number of avenues to determine a motive but say they have been unable to at this stage.

'Extremely concerning' incident

Detective Tilley says the shooting is "extremely concerning".

"This is 9:30 in the morning. You have people going to work, potentially returning home from dropping children at childcare or school," he says.

"To play out in our community in broad daylight, to see a male running down the street with a firearm, and then to fire a shot."

He says nearby people heard the gunshot from inside their homes and in their cars with music playing.

Location was picked at random, police say

Detective Tilley says police do not believe any of the occupants or residents in Denys Street, where the shooting took place, had anything to do with the incident.

"The location of the shooting was just a random location that was picked out by the offender," he says.

SUV believed to have been stolen

Police believe the white Mercedes used in the shooting was stolen from Malvern last September.

Clone plates were used on the car at the time with the registration 1BN7FC.

The vehicle is yet to be recovered.

Police appealing to the community for information

Following an almost six month investigation, police are now reaching out to the community for assistance.

"This is a significant incident that has occurred in our community and we're doing everything we can to solve this matter," detective Tilley says.

Officer's are calling on anyone who might recognise the offender to contact police.

Anyone with any information about the white Mercedes captured in the footage should also contact police.

The car is believed to be a 2018 GLC43 Mercedes Benz.
