That's where we'll leave you

Another wild night of rugby league action ends with two stunning results.

The Cowboys and Rabbitohs both showed remarkable grit tonight to consign two of the game's heavyweights to 1-4 starts to 2025.

For Penrith, you feel they've got the pieces and the pedigree to pull it together by tightening a few screws.

For the Roosters, there's just so little happening in attack it's hard to see them making any waves until Sam Walker is not just back, but 100 per cent rehabilitated from his torn ACL. And that might not be until 2026.

On that cheery note, I'll bid you good night and see you tomorrow.

We've had another 'DARGONS' moment in the Panthers-Cowboys game.

Bennett says he's never seen anything like that

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett says he's never seen a team lose both halves and battle on to a win like that.

"It's everything. It's a team you want to be a part of. Words don't explain it well enough."

Captain Cody Walker says he's never anything quite like that.

Walker says his hamstring is just a little bit tight and feels "like it's on the minor side".

Bennett says he loved the contest he just witnessed and the genuine nature of the rivalry.

"Great game of football played in a great spirit."

Walker and Bennett give their thoughts on the Mitchell pass.

Walker: "He's him.'

Wayne: "He would've run it but he was too tired."

Robinson says Roosters 'definitely' should have won

Coach Trent Robinson says they "definitely" should have won the game considering all the changes the Rabbitohs had to endure.

"We could've done better to exploit [Jai Arrow and Tallis Duncan playing in the centres] but there's many ways to pull a team apart. We had enough field position and we just couldn't pull them apart."

The Roosters and Panthers are both 1-4 to start the season, and the Roosters' only win came against the Panthers in round two.

Robinson says it's a fair reflection of where the Roosters are at.

"This competition tells the truth. You're really disappointed in that but I can see this team, I can see who they are, I can see the intensity they're going after it with."

Robinson says Lindsay Collins has done his MCL but doesn't say how seriously.

The game-winning moment

Peep the pass from Latrell Mitchell.

Doesn't get much better.

South Sydney hangs on for an utterly impossible victory over the Roosters

All the Rabbitohs are beaming and shaking their heads. They can't believe what they've just pulled off.

Halfback Jamie Humphreys went down after five minutes. Five-eighth and captain Cody Walker couldn't play in the second half. Winger Mikaele Ravalawa left soon after the break.

By the end, Jack Wighton and Isaiah Tass were on the wings, back rowers Tallis Duncan and Jai Arrow were in the centres, and Latrell Mitchell was primary play maker in his first game back from injury.

"I'm so bloody proud of the boys," Jack Wighton tells ABC Sport.

"We haven't been the flashiest. Lost both our halves, lost our winger, but everybody stepped up again."

80' Roosters have 15 seconds to go 95 metres

There was no thought of a field goal from Souths in that set despite leading 20-14.

77' The Rabbitohs hanging on

The defence is standing firm for now against, it must be said, some meek Roosters attack.

But the Rabbitohs are doing this without both halves and a winger, with a centre moved to first receiver in his first game back from a hamstring injury and two back rowers playing in the centres.

Mitchell catches a miscued Roosters bomb on the tryline and is taking his time to get back to his feet. I'm sure he's trying to kill some clock, but I think he's really truly exhausted. No way was he expecting to have to do this much work tonight.

A MIRACLE BALL FROM LATRELL MITCHELL!

It's been a mixed night for Latrell in his return to the NRL, but he's just thrown an absolute miracle ball, cutting out Keaon Koloamatangi and Tallis Duncan and hitting Isaiah Tass on the sideline.

The replays from in front show he didn't step on the line. The angle from behind looks worse for the Rabbitohs.

But the try is confirmed.

Mitchell converts from the sideline.

(By the way, I'm not convinced that pass wasn't forward.)

68' A FOURTH KICK OUT ON THE FULL

Latrell Mitchell has been thrust into this playmaking role and tries for the 40/20, but again slices it and it's out on the full.

That's his second and the fourth for both teams tonight.
