I think we'd best leave it there

Well, that's as emotional a Monday morning as I've had in a long while.

I'm sure there are plenty of people with tears in their eyes watching that as well.

A modern masterpiece of a sporting contest in all of its flawed brilliance from Rory McIlroy, ending over a decade of hurt with a nerve-shredding battle for the ages.

Let's not forget Justin Rose.

For the fifth time he has finished as runner up in a Major, his 18th top 10 finish.

A brilliant performance on the final day too, that ultimately was unrewarded.

But the story is Rory. Isn't it always so?

The drought is over. The grand slam complete.

It's been a wonderful morning of sport. Thanks for being with me.

Rory McIlroy is presented with the Green Jacket

A jacket he coveted so much.

He is handed it by last year's champion Scotty Scheffler.

It's approaching 1am in Northern Ireland at the moment.

I bet the party is only just getting started.

A victory 14 years in the making

"I think I would say it was 14 years in the making," McIlroy says.

"From going out with a four-shot lead in 2011.

"There was a lot of pent-up emotion that just came out on that 18th green.

"A moment like that makes all the years and all the close calls worth it."

He now chokes up when talking about his parents, and the tears come again.

"I can't wait to see them next week and celebrate this with them," he says with tears in his eyes.

McIlroy: Double bogey on the first 'calmed my nerves'

Rory McIlroy hails his ability to bounce back now.

"When I hit the wedge shot into the creek on 13, I felt like I did a really good job of bouncing back from that," he says.

"I was really nervous going out.

"It's almost as if the double bogey at the first calmed my nerves a little bit and got me into it.

"The way I responded to setbacks, that's what I'll take from this week."

'I wondered if it would ever be my time': McIlroy

Here is the Masters champion, in the Lodge.

"It feels incredible," he says.

"This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder whether it would ever be my time.

"And the last 10 years coming here, with the burden of the grand slam on my shoulders.

"Makes me wonder what we're going to talk about going into next year's Masters.

"I'm just absolutely honoured and thrilled to be able to call myself a Masters champion."

Incredible pressure shots from McIlroy
A popular win

It might be due to lack of sleep.

But I think I've got something in my eye.

Both of them, as it happens.

'I gotta go get a Green Jacket': McIlroy

Brilliant.

Rory McIlroy hugs his friends and family and utters a line that may go down as one of the most immortal in the sport.

"I gotta go get a Green Jacket," he says after wiping his face.

And his friends roar.

Incredible scenes

Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood are there to embrace their good friend in the biggest of bear hugs after McIlroy walks, tears streaming down his face, on his way to the clubhouse.

This is so emotional.
