The NTWC has cancelled its Tsunami advisory for several zones, including the coastal areas of British Columbia and South Alaska, as well as American Samoa, Reuters reports.

Smaller-than-expected Tsunami waves reach French Polynesia

We have received reports that Tsunami waves have begun hitting the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, but the waves were forecast to be smaller than initially feared.

The highest wave heights are yet to come, but they are now expected to reach 1.1 to 2.5 metres, down from a previous forecast of up to four metres, the High Commission of the Republic in French Polynesia says.

Some initial wave surges have been reported on the island of Nuku Hiva, and between five and 10 additional ocean waves are expected in the coming hours, according to the high commission.

Nuku Hiva is the largest Marquesas island and is about 1,400 km northeast of Tahiti, also part of French Polynesia.

Elsewhere in French Polynesia, wave heights are expected to remain below 30 centimetres - not requiring evacuation or sheltering.

Volcano on Russia's Kamchatka peninsula begins erupting

The Klyuchevskoy volcano on Russia's Kamchatka peninsula has begun erupting, following a powerful earthquake in the Pacific, a geological monitoring service says.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the Russian Academy of Sciences' United Geophysical Service says: "A descent of burning hot lava is observed on the western slope. Powerful glow above the volcano, explosions".

Located around 450 km north of the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Klyuchevskoy is one of the highest volcanoes in the world.

It has erupted several times in recent years.

Wednesday's 8.8 magnitude quake off Kamchatka damaged buildings and injured several people in the remote Russian region, but no fatalities were reported.

The NDC has confirmed that the tsunami threat has now largely passed and the risk to coastal communities has diminished.
