That is all for the live blog this evening

A dramatic night of Formula 1 ends.

Oscar Piastri crashed on the open lap of the grand prix.

Lando Norris was only able to score six championship points.

And Max Verstappen has reminded us that this may still be a three-way fight for the title.

This is where we will end ABC Sport's live digital coverage of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Join us in a fortnight for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Goodnight.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position while Oscar Piastri crashed on the opening lap and had his Formula 1 lead over McLaren teammate Lando Norris slashed to 25 points.

McLaren had hoped to secure their 10th Formula 1 constructors' title, and second in a row, on Sunday with a record seven rounds remaining, but must now wait until Singapore on October 5.

George Russell finished second for Mercedes, who moved up to second place and 333 points behind McLaren with 346 still to be won, and Carlos Sainz third for Williams's first podium finish of the season.

Norris started and finished seventh, with his chances of scoring more points scuppered by a slow pit stop for the second successive race.

The win was Verstappen's second in a row and he was absolutely dominant, leading from pole to flag and setting the fastest lap to revive his slim title hopes with the reigning champion now 69 points behind Piastri.

"I think this weekend has been incredible for us," Verstappen said after his 67th career win and fourth of the season.

"For us to win here again is just fantastic.

"We had clean air all the time and you could then look after your tyres. And yeah, it was pretty straightforward."

Russell, recovering from sickness, was happy to see a rough weekend finish strongly, while Sainz was the happiest man on the podium.

"I cannot describe how happy I am and how good this feels. It tastes even better than my first ever podium," said the four-time race winner with Ferrari.

The big story came on the opening lap when Piastri, who crashed in qualifying and started ninth, jumped the start and went to the back of the field before ploughing into the wall at turn five.

The crash ended the Australian's record of being the only driver to score in every race this season and also put the brakes on a run of 34 races in the points.

Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli was fourth for Mercedes, redeeming himself after a poor home race weekend at Monza, with New Zealander Liam Lawson enjoying a career-high fifth for Racing Bulls.

Yuki Tsunoda was sixth for Red Bull with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc following Norris home in eighth and ninth.

French rookie Isack Hadjar made it a double points finish for Racing Bulls in 10th.

George Russell fights through illness

George Russell was ill all weekend.

So, finishing second is a great result.

"Not bad considering I felt like ****** all weekend," he told his team after taking the chequered flag.

Celebrations for Williams

It is a great day for Williams.

Their first podium finish since 2021, and the first in a full-length grand prix since 2017.

Williams is fifth in the constructors' championship, 20 points ahead of Racing Bulls.

Battle for the F1 world championship

Oscar Piastri has got away with one tonight.

After crashing out on the first lap and scoring no points, Lando Norris had a chance to take a big chunk out of his lead.

But Norris could only finish seventh, scoring six points.

For reference, the difference between first and second is seven championship points.

Meanwhile, are we absolutely ruling out Max Verstappen in the title fight?

His deficit to Piastri is now less than 70 points. It's a huge mountain to climb, but if anyone can do it, it's him.

  1. Oscar Piastri, 324
  2. Lando Norris, 299 (-25)
  3. Max Verstappen, 255 (-69)

It is two wins in a row for Max Verstappen.

He continues to prove he is still the best driver in Formula 1.

Here are his thoughts after winning in Baku.

"I think this weekend has been incredible for us. For us to win here again is fantastic," he says.

"In the race the car was working well on both compounds. It was pretty straightforward."

George Russell speaks after finishing second

George Russell secured second for Mercedes.

Russell has been reportedly sick throughout the weekend, which makes the result even more impressive.

"A rough weekend for me personally, but glad to be back on the podium," Russell says.

"I was pretty relieved to see the chequered flag to be honest, but I feel a bit better than I did on Friday."

Carlos Sainz celebrates his first podium for Williams

What a great day for Williams.

It is the team's first podium since George Russell in a shortened Belgian Grand Prix in 2021.

It is the first podium for Williams in a full-length grand prix since Azerbaijan in 2017 with Lance Stroll.

"Honestly, I cannot describe how happy I am, how good this feels," Sainz says.

"We have been fighting hard all year and today we proved when we have the speed, and everything comes together, we can do some amazing things.

"We didn't make one mistake and managed to beat a lot of cars I didn't expect to beat."

Lando Norris finishes seventh

Lando Norris could not make any late moves.

He will finish seventh, and he will score six championship points.

He has reduced Oscar Piastri's lead in the drivers' championship from 31 to 25 points.

But with Piastri crashing on the first lap, the Australian may breathe a sigh of relief.

His lead could have been a lot narrower.
