Thanks for joining us!

Well, not the result Australia wanted.

And in truth, not the performance, either.

The 50th ranked Venezuelans are deserved 1-0 winners in Houston and Australia's hopes of a pot two seeding for next year's World Cup draw take a hit.

The Socceroos will be looking to get things back on track on Wednesday, when they face Colombia in New York.

We hope to see you then!

Uninspiring stuff from Australia

It's fair to say the Socceroos weren't at their best today.

Tony Popovic named a relatively inexperienced starting XI, but that doesn't stand up as too much of an excuse when we consider that 26 of Venezuela's 30-man squad had played no more than two international games before today.

Here's a closer look at the stats:

  • Possession: Venezuela 66% - 34% Australia
  • Shots on goal: 10 - 10
  • Shots on target: 6 - 4
  • Expected goals 1.11 - 0.72

That late flurry of chances really pumped up those stats for the Socceroos.

FT: Venezuela 1 - 0 Australia

That was a pretty disjointed performance from the Socceroos.

No cohesion, no control and no real bite until very late on.

The introductions of Martin Boyle, Al Hasan Toure and Riley McGree injected some urgency into proceedings for Australia, but it was too little and far too late.

Venezuela, who, it must be remembered, played an even more experimental outfit than Australia did, outplayed and outthought the Socceroos in pretty much every aspect of the game.

La Vinotinto dictated the territory and possession in Houston, and looked the more likely side throughout the encounter.

A deserved win for the world's 50th ranked team.

90' Three minutes of time added on

Finally, it seems the Socceroos are finding their feet in this game.

Unfortunately, there will be just three minutes more of it.

They are making good inroads towards the Venezuelan penalty area and then standing up a good ball into the box.

Al Hasan Toure's eyes light up and he tries the spectacular!

But he doesn't make good connection with his bicycle kick and that's a goal kick.

88' Free-kick chance for Australia

Riley McGree is brought down on the edge of the area and Australia has a chance from the dead ball.

Callum Elder lines it up and sidefoots one past the wall but straight into the arms of a stooping Jose Contreras.

86' Toure goes close!

Really sharp centre forward play from debutant Al Hasan Toure.

He gets on the end of a clever lofted through ball and lashes a first time shot towards goal.

It's well saved by Jose Contreras.

How are we feeling, Socceroos fans?

Not a whole lot from the Socceroos today.

They have 10 minutes to find an equaliser.

80' Another Socceeroos debut

And we have our fourth Australian debutant of the night!

Sydney FC's Al Hasan Toure — the brother of withdrawn forward Mo — enters the fray.

He's on for Nestory Irankunda and will lead the line for the remainder of the game.

And Jackson Irvine, who missed the last three international windows through injury, makes his Socceroos return! He's on in place of Paul Okon-Engstler.

76' Australia struggling to get a foot on the ball

This game is fading fast for the Socceroos.

Venezuela has held onto the ball for the best part of the last five minutes, while Australia sits off and watches the ball being circulated through midfield.

La Vinotinto eventually accelerate and play a good-looking ball into the box but it just about evades Jesus Ramirez.

70' McGree tests Contreras

Those substitutions have certainly added a bit more urgency into Australia's play.

Marin Boyle and Nestory Irankunda are linking up well on the edge of the box before Riley McGree side foots a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

It's a tame effort and an easy save for Jose Contreras, but it's a shot on target nonetheless — Australia's first for 65 minutes.
