We'll say goodbye for now

Well, what a turn up for the books.

McLaren errors have gifted Max Verstappen another victory that puts him within striking distance of the Formula 1 world championship title.

The next race is just a week away from us, with the title on the line in a three-way battle royale.

Overtaking is a lot easier than at Qatar, that surely has to go down as one of the weakest of all F1's circuits on the calendar.

Will we have more drama when we get to Abu Dhabi? You'd better believe we will.

Thanks for being with me overnight.

We'll catch you next week.

Verstappen 'didn't expect to win'

"I didn't expect to win today, that's for sure," Verstappen says.

"Looking at pure pace, we were not on the same level as McLaren, but we made the right call, as most of the grid did.

"That made the race for me."

He says that this is another example of McLaren making a mistake that keeps him in the title race.

What does Piastri need to do?

Oscar Piastri has to win next weekend.

That is not negotiable.

But his teammate Lando Norris has to finish sixth or lower.

Piastri is just four points behind Max Verstappen, so winning will be enough even if Verstappen finishes second.

'I feel pretty crap': Piastri upset

Oscar Piastri is speaking again now.

He says that he's not spoken to anyone from the team, but is feeling "pretty crap".

"I don't really know what to say, we got it wrong with the strategy," he says.

"I left it in the team's hands to decide what the best strategy was.

"I'm not sure today's decision was due to that [not favouring one driver over the other].

"I think we just got it wrong, but I'll talk to the team."

'He was broken': Piastri dreams in tatters

Martin Brundle is still speaking on Fox Sports' coverage.

He does not think there is anything in questions over the team trying to be fair to both drivers ending up costing them, it was just a bad read of the situation.

However, the ex-F1 driver and Le Mans winner said Oscar Piastri was "broken" after that result.

"He was broken, because he has dominated this weekend," Brundle says.

"He was comfortably the fastest driver around this track.

"It's cost him a very important victory."

Should McLaren have pitted?
Mistake 'nothing to do' with playing fair

Lando Norris does not look happy.

"It's tough. We just had to have faith in the team making the right decision," he says.

"It was a gamble, we were the ones that took the gamble.

"Now it's the wrong decision. We shouldn't have done it.

"Oscar lost the win and I lost the P2.

"We've done plenty of good jobs in other races ... that's life."

He is asked whether the Papaya Rules came into account.

"It's got nothing to do with that," Norris says, quite abruptly.

McLaren drivers will be allowed to race

More from McLaren principle, Andrea Stella.

"First of all, we understand Oscar being very disappointed because he did everything right," Stella says.

"In terms of adapting how we do racing, we always want to keep both options open for both drivers.

"They are both in position to win the championship.

"There's been often in Formula 1 where it was the third one who wins the championship. 2007, I think it was the same in 2010.

"I think we have to respect the fact that Oscar has chances to win and therefore we are going to let them race."

McLaren admit not pitting was 'not the correct decision'

"It's a disappointing result overall, "Andrea Stella, McLaren chief engineer, says.

"We were in condition, we were in position to win the race with Oscar certainly.

"The podium was available for Lando.

"We lost the victory with Oscar and we lost the podium for Lando, so definitely not the outcome that we wanted.

"Something to review in relation to the decision we made when there was the safety car in lap seven.

"We will get stronger for the next event which is now decisive and more important."

Stella confirms that McLaren made the decision and it was a mistake.

"It was a decision not to pit," he said.

"We didn't expect everyone else to pit. Obviously when everyone else behind you pits it makes it the right thing to do. When you are the lead car you don't know what the other cars are going to do.

"Effectively, the main reason was that we didn't expect everyone else to pit. It was a decision, but as a matter of fact, it was not the correct decision."
