Some fires in Taree appear to be 'deliberately lit', local fire service says

Fire and Rescue NSW says it's concerned some fires are being deliberately lit on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The Taree Fire Station Captain Anthony Shoesmith said there had been a number of grass and bush fires along the outskirts of local housing areas in recent days.

He said it appeared some of the fires had been deliberately lit and urged people to consider the potential impact on life and properties.

"In Taree overnight we had quite a few fires deliberately lit unfortunately, but we managed to get those under control," he said.

"It is a dangerous act to light a fire, the wind can change direction, it can cause property damage, endanger life, so it is concerning for us."

Park runners undeterred by New South Wales heat

Despite the soaring temperatures, more than 130 people still turned out for their weekly parkrun at Green Point Reserve in Lake Macquarie today.

Event co-director Peter Scotchmer said it takes a lot more than hot weather to deter the dedicated runners and volunteers.

“It’s a challenge in this weather but people still love it,” he said.

“And now [they have finished] they’ll all go and grab a coffee or a drink together.”

Lake Macquarie is set to reach 39 degrees today.
