We're ending our live coverage

That will conclude our live coverage of the shooting at Brown University in the United States.

Currently, the shooter remains at large and parts of the campus remain in lockdown as police continue to investigate.

Thanks for joining us in our coverage today.

Shooter wore a camouflage mask

The suspect in the Brown University shooting may have also been wearing a grey camouflage mask, Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O'Hara says.

He says that information is based on witness accounts.

Mr O'Hara says the suspect is male and could be in his 30s and the shooting happened inside of a classroom.

Brown University President Christina Paxson says she has been told all the victims are students.

How common are mass shootings on Rhode Island?

While shootings in the US are unfortunately common, in the country's smallest state by size, they are a little less so.

Since 2013, Rhode Island, with a population of 1.1 million, has had three shootings where the number of victims was greater than four, including today's, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

For comparison, there have been 243 shootings with four or more victims in California, with a population of 39.4 million, in the same time period.

Exams at Brown cancelled as hunt for suspect continues

Final exams scheduled for tomorrow have been cancelled, Brown University Provost Frank Doyle said during a news conference.

"At this time, we will not be having final exams tomorrow," he said.

CCTV released by police of the suspected gunman does not show many identifiable characteristics.

Shelter-in-place warning continues

It's just gone past midnight in Providence and students at Brown University and those in the surrounding area are still in lockdown.

Streets that normally bustle with activity on weekends are eerily quiet.

Police say they will enter some non-residential buildings to escort people to safe locations.

The gunman is still on the loose.

Police release video showing person of interest in Brown shooting

Surveillance video released by police shows a man investigators believe is the suspect shooter as he leaves the Barus and Holley engineering building.

The video, only a few seconds long, shows a man in dark pants, a dark jacket and what appears to be a cap of some kind walking down Hope Street and taking a right on Waterman.

It does not show the man's face.

How common are university shootings?

There is no official government database that tracks university shootings in the US, however, the Everytown for Gun Safety project keeps track of K-12 and college shootings.

The project has documented 464 instances of gunfire on college campuses, resulting in 157 deaths since 2013 (not including this ongoing incident).

The most deadly incident occurred at Umpqua Community College in Oregon in 2015 where 10 people were killed, including the 26-year-old shooter, and seven were injured.

Authorities still uncertain how the shooter got inside the classroom

Investigators are not yet sure how the shooter got inside the first-floor classroom.

Outer doors of the building were unlocked, but rooms being used for final exams required badge access, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said.

Engineering design exams were underway in the Barus and Holley building when the shooting occurred.
