Thank you for joining us these last two weeks

Wow.

What an EPIC final that was between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

Congratulations to the Spaniard, who is now the youngest male tennis player to complete the career grand slam.

He's very, very deserving of this win.

Overall, we have been treated to an amazing two weeks of tennis and I can't believe it's all over for another year 😔

All of our Aussies did a superb job at their home slam, with notable mentions going to Maddison Inglis, Alex de Minaur, our mixed doubles of Olivia Gadecki and John Peers, and men's doubles of Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans.

From all of the ABC Sport Digital team, thank you for joining us on the live blog these last two weeks.

We've enjoyed it, and we can't wait to be back in 2027.

Goodnight!

'This trophy is ours': Alcaraz thanks his team for the win

At just 22, he has redefined what is possible in this sport.

He is the youngest man to complete the career grand slam.

And here he goes accepting the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.

"Wow, I mean first of all I just wanted to talk about Novak. He deserves an ovation for sure," Alcaraz says.

"You [Novak] were talking about how I'm doing the things but what you're doing is really inspiring, not for only tennis players but athletes around the world.

"For me, I enjoy it so much watching you play and it's been an honour sharing the court with you."

The champion also thanks his team, who have been by his side through the good and bad.

"We did the right work, you were pushing me everyday to do the rights things.

"I'm really grateful for everyone I have in my corner, this trophy is ours."

Rafa was in the crowd watching the match. Alcaraz thanks his fellow compatriot for being there and said it's "an honour" playing in front of him.

The crowd are also thanked for the love they give Alcaraz every year he's at Melbourne Park and for "pushing me" in the "tough moments".

Djokovic hints this could be his last time at the Australian Open

Gracious in defeat, Novak Djokovic praised Carlos Alcaraz on his "historic, legendary" run in tennis to date.

The crowd started in unison a "Novak, Novak, Novak!" chant after that.

Speaking on stage, Djokovic thanked his team for "enduring me" and giving him support during the tournament.

"You guys have been a rock in my corner, you have seen the best and worst of me in the last few years," he said.

"This success is your success, of course."

He admitted he had a winning speech prepared and a losing speech prepared, and laughed with the crowd.

"All jokes aside though, I want to keep this short, this is Carlos' moment," he added.

"I always believe in myself and I think that is something that is truly needed and necessary at this level.

"I must be very honest and say that I didn't think I would be standing in the closing ceremony of a grand slam again so I owe you the gratitude of pushing me forward in the last couple weeks.

He went on to hint this could be his last time at Melbourne Park, but did not admit he plans to retire.

"God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or 12 months, so it has been a great ride," he said.

"I love you guys."

The trophy ceremony is underway

We've got a few speeches before Djokovic and Alcaraz come up to collect their hardware.

The stats say it all

Alcaraz dominated all the relevant statistics to complete this victory in four sets.

He had nine aces in total, compared to Djokovic's four.

His 77 per cent edge in first serves, was superior to the Serbian's 66.

But the most crucial of all, was the 27 unforced errors he committed compared to Djokovic's 46.

Soak it up Carlos, this is your moment.

VAMOS, CARLITOS

To win all four grand slams at the age of 22 is quite phenomenal.

Carlos Alcaraz wins the Australian Open 2026!

Carlos Alcaraz has done it! History!

He has defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets to win the Australian Open!!!

He is the youngest ever men's player to complete a career Grand Slam!

There was a 24-shot rally to start the game, ending with a Djokovic error. Alcaraz was pumped up after it.

Djokovic replied with some elite presence of mind to drop a volley short to win the point back.

Alcaraz then sailed to two championship points on the back of two poor first serves from Djokovic.

And Djokovic missed the first serve again in the all important point before hitting the ball long in the rally that followed his second serve.

Game, set, match, championship. Alcaraz is an Australian Open champion.

History made.

Pressure on Djokovic now as he serves to stay in the final

Alcaraz has stormed through another service game with no real issue.

The world's best just produced one of his best service games of the match to put all the pressure on his opponent.

Alcaraz is up 6-5 in the fourth set now. Djokovic is serving to stay alive.

On serve at 5-5

Djokovic holds with ease to keep this set level. It's 5-5 now.

Everyone take a breath, this is great tennis we are watching.

Djokovic is playing much better tennis in this fourth set even though it looked like his body was failing him in the third.

Alcaraz has had an answer for this surge from the Serbian though.
