We'll wrap things up here

On the plus side, at least we can all go and have a Bunnings snag now, while the Americans will have to make do with their sub-par hot dogs and expensive pies.

It is time for us to say goodbye.

We will, of course, be back for a Friday lunchtime special against Paraguay.

And we have another blog running right now for the day's remaining three matches.

Thanks for being with us this morning and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Socceroos handed reality check

Tom Wildie was in Seattle to watch the Socceroos.

He noted that the Socceroos got a big reality check in that dire opening 45 minutes.

Read his full analysis here.

Fan zones packed

It wasn't the result that we were hoping for, but thousands of supporters gathered at live sites around the country.

There are three more matches today...

Just in case you haven't had your fill of football yet, there are three more games to come today, starting with Scotland against Morocco.

David Hirst is blogging away on that match now, so jump on over there to keep him company, won't you.

Where there is Volpato, there's hope

Cristian Volpato only came on after Mat Leckie was forced off with a hamstring injury.

There is little doubt that he showed enough to earn himself a start in the next game.

He posed a threat down the right side throughout his half hour on the pitch.

Would Tony Popovic have given him a run had Leckie not gone down?

Hard to know.

But surely he has to start next time around.

A couple of key post-match stats via Opta

Our friends at Opta have delivered a couple of key stats from the match:

  • USA have won two consecutive matches at the World Cup for the second time, and the first time since winning their first two ever matches in the competition in 1930.
  • CONCACAF nations have netted 17 goals at the 2026 World Cup, already the most ever in a single edition (Canada 7, USA 6, Mexico 3, CuraƧao 1).
  • USA are the first team in World Cup history to benefit from an own goal in two consecutive matches.
  • Australia have conceded three own goals in their World Cup history (also in 1974 and 2018); only Mexico (4) have conceded more (Bulgaria, Morocco and Switzerland also 3).
Stats

Here's the stats from the game.

The USA did have control in all the meaningful stats, including the score.

Pochettino hails team spirit as Pulisic misses out

Mauricio Pochettino noted the USA still performed well despite not having their best player, Christian Pulisic.

"Always difficult because we want to have all the players fit," Pochettino says.

"He's an important player for us but that is a team. It was impossible for him today to play.

"We hope that next game he will be available, but if we want to win the competition we need the whole team.

"All of the players need to be important, but of course Christian is one of the best players in the world and I hope that he can recover as soon as possible and can show it on the pitch and help the team."

Pochettino also hails the USA fans who, it has to be said, were excellent.

"Amazing. I was saying yesterday Argentina have amazing fans, but I think we are matching Argentina. Our fans, I'm so happy for them."

Pochettino says USA 'dominated'

Here's the USA boss Mauricio Pochettino.

"I think it was a fantastic game again, very good first half.

"I think we dominated the game against a very tough team.

"When the draw happened in December I thought it was really difficult, a really tough game."

Oh no, not the dominate thing again ...

That being said, they did dominate the first half, so I suppose that's valid.

And they won.

So, you know.

Popa needs to take responsibility
