The 28-year-old is looking to make the semifinals for the first time at a grand slam.

Sun will face Donna Vekić. Also in the quarters is Italy's Jasmine Paolini, the seventh seed.

Second seed and Auckland winner Coco Gauff is currently playing fellow American Emma Navarro to play Paolini.

Sun's run is the best at a grand slam for a New Zealander in the singles since Chris Lewis made the 1983 Wimbledon final.

The Te Anau-born Sun earns 375,000 pounds ($782,056) for reaching the final eight, her biggest payday of her young career.

Sun has now won seven matches at Wimbledon including the qualifying run. She'll face Donna Vekic of Croatia on Wednesday morning for a spot in the final four. 

Sun's father is Croatian.
