Up-and-coming middle distance runner Maia Ramsden has broken the New Zealand record in the women's 1500m semifinal despite not qualifying for the final.
Ramsden's impressive performance saw her clock a time of 4m 2.20s, surpassing the previous record by 0.38 seconds.
Although she finished in eighth place and missed out on a spot in the final, Ramsden's achievement of setting a new national record was a well-deserved reward.
Ramsden couldn't keep up with the front pack and was dropped at the 800m mark. However, she displayed incredible determination and ran a fast second half, eventually catching up to finish in eighth place.
In a post-race interview with Michael Burgess, Ramsden expressed contentment with her performance but admitted she could have done better.
"It was a lot slower than I expected. But honestly, in the middle that gave me some confidence, but it almost makes it a harder pill to swallow.
"It's like that was a race I could have made it in and I just didn't have the legs at the end in the last 50 which I usually do. So it's just kind of brutal but the way it goes.
"[My plan] was to hang back a little and close a bit harder because it gets really jostling in there. Some women are a lot stronger than me in that field ... Hopefully I'll be in a different place four years from now."
This record-breaking feat adds to Ramsden's already impressive resume.
Earlier this year, she became the first woman in 20 years to win back-to-back NCAA Division 1 titles. Currently a student at Harvard University, Ramsden spent part of her childhood in Wellington.
