No major outages for Auckland

A statement from Vector:

"Following the windy weather which set in yesterday afternoon, our crews worked late into the night to make necessary repairs and restore power to those impacted.

"Once the wind watch was lifted at around 10pm last night, our crews did a fantastic job of restoring almost all impacted customers. As of 8am, we currently have no major outages relating to yesterday’s weather event and have resumed business as usual."

Stranded climbers in contact with authorities, will be rescued when weather allows

Police are this morning in contact with two people who became stranded at Aoraki Mount Cook National Park around 2:45pm.

Due to the weather conditions, the pair were unable to be rescued at the time.

Police and Mt Cook DoC are currently reassessing when is going to be the best time to attempt an extraction of the two climbers.

Freezing start to the day
  • Christchurch, Timaru and Blenheim residents are waking up to freezing temperatures of -2C with overnight lows of -3C.

  • Nelson and Rotorua are also in the negatives with -1C and with lows of -2C.

  • Wellington got to as low as 3C overnight, only climbing to 4C as residents of the capital begin to start their day.

  • Masterton and Hamilton are also seeing a chilly start, getting to as low as 0C this morning.

  • Aucklanders are also feeling the cold after getting down to 9C overnight and only climbing to 10C this morning, well-below average for this time of year.

Transpower issues notice advising of possible grid shortage

Transpower doesn't expect any impact on consumers’ electricity supply this morning.

A Customer Advice Notices was issued to electricity generators, local lines companies and major industrial customers connected directly to the grid, not electricity consumers.

The electricity industry responded well, Transpower said.
