Levin weather update: Council’s Incident Management Team stood down

Council have responded to all requests for service and will continue to monitor the situation overnight and tomorrow morning.

Brent Harvey, local Controller explains “Council’s Incident Management Team has now been stood down, however, we remain ready to respond if the situation changes.”

Invercargill power outage caused by a duck flying into power lines

An investigation into the cause of a power outage in Invercargill has been completed.

A PowerNet statement said the outage was caused by a duck flying into power lines – not a downed power pole or power lines as previously thought.

Power has been restored to all local customers, as of approximately 1.30pm today.

Tornado updates: Focus now shifts to clean-up efforts

Following the tornado that hit Levin at approximately 7.45am this morning, bringing down trees, damaging utility lines, and lifting roofs and fences in parts of the town, the focus now shifts to clean-up efforts and the ongoing needs of those affected. 

Mayor Bernie Wanden says: “Our thoughts are with those affected by today’s event. Please know that we’re here for you and doing everything we can to support our community through the response and recovery.”

Strong winds and gales are set to continue – gusts could reach 120km/h

Strong winds and gales are set to continue up the Canterbury coast this afternoon and through central parts of New Zealand.

MetService says the strongest winds are expected in Banks Peninsula, where gusts could reach 120km/h.  

Strong wind watches and warnings run through into the afternoon or evening, except for the Chatham Islands where the strongest winds will be tonight.

Snow forecast for the lower South Island this afternoon

MetService predicts that Queenstown will drop to a low of 4C overnight. 

10cm snow falls at Cardrona Alpine Resort

Up to 10 centimetres of snow has fallen at Cardrona Alpine Resort between Queenstown and Wānaka.

Cardrona is set to open on June 15.

Trampoline lifted in the wild Levin weather

A trampoline is missing its owner after it flew into the Levin TOP 10 Holiday Park during the tornado.
