NZ Defence Force monitoring Marlborough area overnight

Marlborough Emergency Management will keep monitoring the region for flooding risks overnight.

In a statement, they said the NZ Defence Force and council staff would "monitor flood prevention infrastructure" in the area for any changes following today's severe weather.

Residents of Lower Terrace and those near Gibson's Creek and the Waihopai/Wairau river intersection are advised to be "ready to go" should the stopbank at that crossing become unstable, although the water level at that bank has peaked and is dropping.

"An emergency mobile alert is ready to be sent should an evacuation be required immediately. If required to evacuate, people are recommended to stay with family or friends as a first option. The Civil Defence Centre at Stadium 2000 will be available from tomorrow morning.

"The evacuation order for affected streets in Spring Creek township remains in place overnight and will be reassessed tomorrow morning. The Wairau River has peaked and is now tracking down."

Numerous homes affected by floodwaters near Motueka

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said a number of households on Motueka River West Bank Rd are impacted by floodwaters tonight.

They have attempted to help people evacuate their homes where it is safe to do so.

In some cases, people have needed to stay within their homes in areas where Fire and Emergency have not been able to access them.

A Fire and Emergency shift manager told the Herald that at this stage, they believe no one in the affected homes has any life-threatening injuries.

He could not provide an exact number of people in these situations.

Some people may be staying in upper levels of their homes or in any safe locations within their properties.

Marlborough residents warned 'be ready to evacuate'

Residents in a small Marlborough town have been warned to "be ready to evacuate" after a bank became unstable.

Marlborough Emergency Management has issued the warning for Renwick's Lower Terrace area.

Incident Controller Richard MacNamara said the council’s hydrology team had been running modelling on a stopbank at the intersection of the Waihopai/Wairau rivers and determined the bank had become unstable.

This poses a risk of breaking and flooding lower parts of Renwick township (Lower Terrace) and surrounding land adjacent to Gibson’s Creek and up to the Waihopai/Wairau confluence.

“We are taking the precaution of advising residents of Lower Terrace to be prepared to evacuate. The NZ Defence Force, FENZ and Marlborough’s Rapid Response team NZ-RT20 will be door knocking in the area," MacNamara said.

Dunedin City Council advises people to stay home

The Dunedin City Council has opened a sandbagging station in response to MetService's heavy rain warning in the region.

The council said the station would provide free sand, bags and shovels for "anxious or worried" residents to take at the Dunedin Ice Stadium carpark at 101 Victoria Road, St Kilda.

They were "not expecting any significant flooding" tonight, the council said in a social media post.

"Our contractors will be on standby throughout the night, ready to respond to any emerging issues, but our network is well placed to cope with what's forecast.

"Our advice is to get home, stay warm and dry, and minimise travelling on the roads."
