Nelson-Tasman update

Floods, slips and damage have made roads in the Nelson-Tasman area unsafe and poeple are asked to stay off the roads unless travel is "absolutely necessary".
️"Crews are working hard to assess and repair all urgent lifelines," Nelson Tasman Civil Defence said. "Unnecessary travel delays their work."
Some communities are cut off without power, water or communications.

Local road closures are listed at https://buff.ly/0B3Horm and state highway closures are at  https://buff.ly/CTNDHKU

There is no access to Nelson via SH6 from Murchison.
Meanwhile, water supply to Tapawera residents has been restored but residents should boil and conserve water until further notice.
The water supply to Riwaka and most parts of Kaiteriteri has been restored. The water is fully treated and safe to drink.
However, water is not yet back for the area incorporating Kahu Close, Kimi Ora, Bethany Park and street numbers above 67 Martin Farm Rd and is unlikely to be restored today.
An alternative water supply will continue to be made available to affected residents.
Civil Defence has done a welfare check via helicopter for residents in Tapawera, Tadmor and Mārahau to assess needs and triage urgent medical requirements.
Locals are urged to follow all boil water notices carefully, and bore users should also boil water as a precaution.
Households without safe running water should:
- Boil water for 1 minute (or until the jug switches off), OR
- Disinfect with 5 drops of plain, unscented bleach per litre (½ tsp per 10L). Wait 30 minutes.
- Do not use bleaches that contain detergents.
The instructions apply to water used for drinking, food preparation (including baby formula), for brushing teeth and washing dishes.
The agency also urges people to check in with your neighbours: "Let's look after each other".
It also says people should be careful when using camp stoves, which need a stable, heat-resistant surface in ventilated areas.
"Avoid candles if [the] power's out — use torches instead."
Householders should also:

Turn off appliances that were on when the power went out
Get flood-soaked appliances checked by an electrician
Treat all power lines as live at all times and stay clear.
Stay out of flood waters: They may be contaminated.

Wash your hands with soap and water if you come into contact with flood water.
Navigation
There are also hazards in the water. Please take care if navigating and watch out for debris.

Slip on Victory Rd, Laingholm

Auckland Council general manager of engineering, assets and technical advisory, Paul Klinac, says geotechnical experts are also on the way to  a slip on Victory Rd, in Laingholm.

He said the council has also sent geotechnical experts to help assess a slip on Motutara Rd in Muriwai.

“Our geotechnical assessment found that the slip, which is now contained, is affecting one property and there’s no adjoining property risk. The council and the Recovery Office are in contact with the residents to provide any support required. The road has been reopened. The council will continue to provide support, including checking the safety of the building, as is needed."

Localised slip

Fire and Emergency assistant commander for Waitemata, Chris Lind, said a small section of road at Muriwai has dropped away, taking a power pole with it.

A property directly below the slip, on Motutara Rd, was affected and although two others were not, all three properties were evacuated.

A council representative would be assessing the affected building and decide whether people can come back.

"The structure is intact, the debris is resting against the back of it.  So you have a quantity of mud and soil and some trees, and obviously the water that has come through behind it."

Lind said a council geotechnical engineer and a Fire and Emergency engineer have said the other two properties "can be reoccupied when they need to be".

Vector has isolated the power and Fire and Emergency is working with the company and with Downer "to make sure that everything is as it should be".

Lind expected the road would open again in the next hour.

Fire and Emergency provide update on landslide in Auckland's Muriwai

Houses immediately below the landslide zone in Auckland's Muriwai have been evacuated, Henderson Station's senior station officer Phil Grace has told the Herald.

"We have partially cordoned off the road, we will probably be closing it fully for a while while it gets assessed by a geotech engineer.

"At this time our focus is just on making sure people in the community are safe and are not going to be impacted by any further landslip."

Grace said said the slip isn't significant but it is impacting infrastructure, including the road and houses immediately below it.

He confirmed three fire trucks were at the scene, along with USAR.

"I want to assure the community that people are here to support them. Just be vigilant to what's happening in their environment around them and if they have any concerns to speak with the council.

"Currently, multiple agencies are in attendance; Fire, police, engineers from the council, Downers, and a USAR engineer."

Properties still without power in Motueka, Golden Bay - Civil Defence

Around 3200 properties are still without power in the Motueka and Golden Bay areas, Nelson Tasman Civil Defence group controller Alec Louverdis told media just after 1pm.

However, a broken water pipe supplying Kaiteriteri had now been repaired, restoring water supply to the beach settlement.

The situation was improving in the district, and they would reassess later today whether civil defence centres in several places, including Motueka, needed to remain open.

"The rivers are receding and we passed the high tide mark at 10.45am."

The response to last night's damaging wind and rain included delivering food to around 40 people in cut-off Tapawera, Louverdis said.

"Our focus is returning services [to communities], especially power."

More rain and wind are forecast for the district, he said.

The rain forecast didn't look too concerning, but they'd be keeping an eye on the wind, with 30kmh to 40kmh wind expected on Monday.

Tasman Mayor Tim King has previously said the wind in this weather event had been particularly problematic, many trees coming down due to wind and sodden land.
