David Seymour also attended the evening event, and shared an image of him lighting a candle on a Hanukkah menorah.

"After last night’s horror, I was proud to light a candle with the Prime Minister, remembering light drives out darkness," he wrote.

Luxon shares message to social media

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has shared a message to social media after the Bondi shooting, saying: "Hanukkah is a time of peace and joy, not of pain and grief".

"It is in that spirit that David Seymour, Mark Mitchell and I joined members of Auckland’s Jewish community this evening for a prayer and candlelight service.

"It has been a heavy day for the Jewish community in New Zealand. Tonight, our thoughts are with Jewish people in Australia, and with Jewish communities around the world."

'Quiet loner': Schoolmates open up about alleged gunman

The surviving alleged Bondi Beach massacre gunman has been described as a "quiet loner" who only had a small group of friends before dropping out of high school.

Former classmate Steven Luong, who spent years playing sports alongside Akram, told DailyMail his stomach dropped the moment the familiar face flashed across the screen.

Luong described Akram as a quiet student who kept to a small circle of friends and spent most afternoons on the basketball court after school.

"He was never in trouble," he said.

"We played basketball until about 5pm most days, and then he would just make his way home."

Another classmate told DailyMail she shared several classes with Naveed, who was "one of the smart kids".

"I’m very shocked, to be honest," she said.

"He was just normal. Nice. Quiet.

"We were never friends, but spoke in passing. Same classes, same teachers, sat near each other. [It is] so crazy," she said.

Local man stomped on Bondi shooter’s head after police takedown

A Bondi local reportedly stomped on one of the Bondi Beach shooters’ heads during last night’s terror attack.

Local resident Jacob Barnfield said he stomped on the head of terrorist Naveed Akram, who was being held down by officers after being shot by police, news.com.au reported.

“It was a bit of a dog shot, but I don’t regret it at all. He deserved every bit of it,” Barnfield told Sunrise.

Mark Mitchell says NZ stands with Australia after attack

Minister for Ethnic Communities Mark Mitchell said New Zealand stands in solidarity with Australians and condemns the fatal terror attack.

"This type of cowardly terror attack has no place in society," Mitchell said.

"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and all those affected in Australia."

He said the New Zealand Government responded to ensure this country's Jewish community feel safe and supported.

"We have increased visible police patrols around synagogues and Jewish centres and we are providing additional security measures where no one should ever feel unsafe because of their faith or identity.

"Anti-Semitism has no place in New Zealand. We will call it out and take action to protect our Jewish community, wherever it may appear," Mitchell said.
