Mark Mitchell 'confident' Waiwera slip will be cleared by tomorrow morning

Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery Mark Mitchell has given an update on this morning's slip in Waiwera.

"I've been talking with the teams and they're quietly confident they could probably have the slip cleared by about midnight tonight. However, you just don't know with these things, but I'm pretty confident that by tomorrow morning they'll have it cleared."

He told Newstalk ZB Fulton Hogan was doing an "outstanding job" clearing the debris after trees came down on an apartment block in the area.

"A full survey of the damage hasn't been done yet because obviously they've been evacuated as a precaution."

He estimated there were about 12 to 18 apartments in the building, the occupants of whom were now staying with friends and family.

Mitchell said Kiwis should continue to keep an eye on the weather this long weekend but encouraged them to still enjoy it.

"People just need to keep checking, use their own danger sense. If they think there is a risk of a slip then report it and get themselves, removed themselves until it can at least be checked."
